Queens, NY
Italian immigrants arrived on Ellis Island and would then spread to other areas close by in the early 1900s. Astoria is a neighbourhood of Queens that was first settled by the Dutch, English and Germans in the 17thcentury. In the early 1900s the Italians were the next significant immigrants, bringing many new Italian restaurants, delis, bakeries and pizza shops to the area. In 1910, Astoria became largely Irish, Italian, Bohemian (Czech) and Slovak. Another section of Queens, Howard Beach, has an area called Lindenwood which was developed in the 1950s and 1960s. Residents of Lindenwood tended to be mostly ethnic Jewish and Italians.
Today Astoria and Howard Beach in Queens are one of the few Little Italies in New York that remained as largely Italian populated neighbourhoods.
