Italian immigrants arrived on Ellis Island and would then spread to other areas close by in the late 1800s. Soon after 1880 many Italian immigrants began settling in the area where big farms and estates begun to be divided into smaller parcels. During World War II this area was also used as an Italian Prisoner-of-war camp.
Today, the Rossville section of Staten Island is the biggest Italian neighbourhood in New York today and Tottenville in Staten Island also is a large Little Italy, heavily populated with Italians. In general, the borough of Staten Island has the highest proportion, around 40% of the population, of Italian Americans of any county in the United States, with the majority living in the South Shore of Staten Island, where 80% of inhabitants report Italian ancestry.
